STMicroelectronics STUSBCD01B USB Charger Detection Interface Datasheet

Datasheet 19 pages · 454 KB · EN

The STMicroelectronics STUSBCD01B is an integrated circuit designed to provide USB charger detection functionality for platforms lacking this feature in their PHY. It operates with a supply voltage ranging from 2.2 V to 4.5 V and includes an internal regulator that generates the required 1.8 V for internal blocks.

The device implements two distinct detection methods selectable via the STATUS/METHOD pin: a dedicated charger detection method using current sources/sinks on DP/DM lines, and a current sink method based on USB battery charging spec v1.0. It features an active high open drain hardware detection pin (DETECT) and supports over-voltage protection up to 6 V.

Questions answered in these manuals

What detection methods does the STUSBCD01B support?

The device supports a dedicated charger detection method and a current sink method for Host/Hub chargers.

From: STMicroelectronics STUSBCD01B USB Charger Detection Interface Datasheet

How does the device detect a dedicated charger?

It uses a current source on the DP pin and a current sink on the DM pin to detect the resistor connecting them.

What external components are required for the STUSBCD01B application circuit?

The device requires five external components: two capacitors to bypass power supplies, one resistor for the VBUS clamping circuit, and two series resistors on the DP/DM data lines.

From: ST AN2865 handbook

How does the STUSBCD01B distinguish between a dedicated charger and a standard host port?

It uses a current sink detection method where it connects a current sink to the DM pin and applies a voltage source to the DP pin; if the DM pin goes high for at least 20 ms during this phase, the detection is successful.
