MAXIM MAX3238 handbook

The MAX3238 is a true RS-232 transceiver that achieves a 1µA supply current with Maxim’s revolutionary AutoShutdown Plus™ feature. When the device does not sense a valid signal transition on either the receiver or transmitter inputs within 30sec, the on-board power supply and drivers shut down. This occurs if the RS-232 cable is disconnected or if the transmitters of the connected peripheral are inactive. The system turns on again when a valid transition is applied to any RS-232 receiver or transmitter input, saving power without changes to the existing BIOS or operating system.

Questions answered in these manuals

What supply voltage range does the MAX3238E/MAX3248E support?

The devices operate from +3.0 V up to +5.5 V.

From: Maxim MAX3238E/MAX3248E Datasheet

How much current does the transceiver draw in AutoShutdown mode?

In AutoShutdown Plus mode the supply current is reduced to 10 nA, and can drop to 1 pA after 30 seconds of inactivity.

From: Maxim MAX3238E/MAX3248E Datasheet

What supply voltage range do the MAX323/324/325 operate from?

They operate from +2.7 V to +16 V.

From: Maxim MAX323/MAX324/MAX325 Precision Single‑Supply SPST Analog Switches Datasheet

What is the typical on‑resistance of these switches?

The on‑resistance is 33 Ω typical and up to 60 Ω maximum.

From: Maxim MAX323/MAX324/MAX325 Precision Single‑Supply SPST Analog Switches Datasheet

What happens to the device in shutdown mode?

In shutdown, the supply current drops below 1 pA, the charge pumps are turned off, V+ is pulled down to Vcc, V‑ is pulled to ground, and the transmitter outputs become high‑impedance.

From: Maxim MAX3222/MAX3232/MAX3237/MAX3241 Datasheet

How many receivers and drivers does the MAX3222 have?

The MAX3222 has 2 receivers and 2 drivers.
