About this manual

The Maxim MAX3222E, MAX3232E, MAX3237E and MAX3241E are low‑power, ESD‑protected RS‑232 transceiver ICs that operate from a 3.0 V to 5.5 V supply and support data rates up to 1 Mbps. They feature dual charge‑pump voltage conversion, shutdown mode with ultra‑low current, and optional MegaBaud operation for the MAX3237E.

The devices are offered in several small‑outline packages (SSOP, SO, TSSOP) and include two receivers and two drivers (four for the MAX3237E). Detailed electrical characteristics, timing parameters, pin descriptions and package dimensions are provided for design reference.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum data rate supported by these devices?

They support data rates up to 1 Mbps, with the MAX3237E offering MegaBaud operation at 1 Mbps under specified load conditions.

How many pins are available in the standard package?

The devices are offered in 16‑Pin SSOP, 16‑Pin Wide SO, 18‑Pin Wide SO, 18‑Pin PDIP, 20‑Pin TSSOP and other small‑outline packages.

What does the shutdown mode do?

In shutdown mode the supply current falls to less than 1 µA (10 nA typ for MAX3237E) and the receivers can remain active while the charge pumps are disabled.

What is the function of the EN pin?

EN is the Receiver Enable pin; it is active low and disables the receiver outputs when asserted.
