Laser Ablation (LA)-ICP-MS for Production Control of Nickel Alloys

This study describes the development of a robust high-throughput analytical method for the determination of 18 elements (15 trace elements and 3 electrolytes) in blood and serum samples using an Agilent Technologies 7500ce collision/reaction cell ICP-MS system. The only sample preparation necessary was dilution using an alkaline diluent containing ammonia, EDTA Triton X-100, and butan-1-ol. Instrument calibration was performed using external calibration with internal standardization. The performance of the method exceeded a previously-used magnetic sector HR-ICP-MS method by at least a factor of three in terms of sample throughput and matched the precision and detection limits of that method.

The Agilent 7500c Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS) was used for the fast, routine, and reliable analysis of 23 trace elements in urine.

This application note demonstrates the suitability of a newly developed, high sensitivity reaction cell inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) for the determination of inorganic impurities in semiconductor grade sulfuric acid. The Agilent 7500cs ICP-MS, featuring a high sensitivity version of the Octopole Reaction System (ORS), was used to analyze sulfuric acid for all the metals required by the semiconductor industry. The enhanced ORS eliminates all plasma and matrix based polyatomics that interfere with the measurement of elements such as K, Ca, Ti, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn while offering excellent ion transmission and sensitivity. Furthermore, all analytes can be measured at high plasma power to promote complete decomposition of the sulfuric acid in the plasma. This leads to high signal stability and a reduced frequency of routine maintenance. Sample preparation is a simple 10x dilution followed by direct analysis thereby significantly reducing the potential for the sample contamination frequently encountered with evaporative matrix elimination techniques.

Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry can be used as a powerful screening tool for the presence of toxic elements and chemicals in the environment. It has the ability to quickly and quantitatively screen many types of samples for toxic metals at ultratrace levels. When hyphenated with gas or liquid chromatography systems, it can also distinguish toxic from nontoxic species of most elements including radioactive forms. Using retention time locking and compound independent calibration, gas chromatography inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (GC-ICP-MS) has the potential to accurately identify and quantify a wide range of volatile toxic organic compounds without the necessity of possessing or analyzing standards for each target analyte. As such, when used in conjunction with other analytical techniques, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry can be a valuable tool in the arsenal against environmental terrorism.

A new technique for the analysis of corundum that has undergone heat treatment and beryllium diffusion to resemble one of the most valuable colored stones: vivid orange-yellow gems known as padparadscha is developed in this study. The technique is based on laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), and chemical analysis with inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is used to verify the LIBS data. The method can be used to distinguish natural and treated gems, especially in the case of unknown treatments. This study shows that the method can be used to determine the authenticity of gems.

Application of Collision/Reaction Cell ICP-MS to the Analysis of Variable and Unknown Samples Without Requiring Matrix-Specific or Element-Specific Tuning and Cell Conditions Cell Operation with an Inert Cell Gas Using an inert cell gas and efficient energy discrimination (ED) removes all of these reported problems, since the cell is operating as a non-reactive environment. The use of an inert gas allows ED to be used as the primary interference removal process, which eliminates the method development inherent in the use of reactive cell gases. This means that the analysis conditions are independent of the analyte being measured (and of the interferences being removed), multi- element analysis is possible and the operating conditions do not have to be optimised for each matrix type. A further benefit of collision mode is that no interference correction equations are necessary. Use of ED depends on the use of a high purity inert cell gas, which is free from organic contaminants and water vapour, so plumbing of the gas supply requires care.
