This document introduces the advantages of Agilent 7700x ICP-MS technology in drinking water analysis. This technology uses the 3rd generation Octopole Reaction System (ORS3) technology to effectively remove polyatomic interferences. He mode is simple and easy to use, and the 7700x ICP-MS can remove all polyatomic interferences in a single set of conditions without requiring any prior knowledge about the sample, and without the need for complex mathematical corrections. This makes setup easier, detection limits are lower, analysis is faster, and interference removal is improved, especially for the difficult plasma-based interferences affecting iron and selenium. Currently, Se detection limits of less than 20ppt are routinely achievable in He mode.

This application note describes the use of an Agilent 6460 triple quadrupole LC/MS equipped with Agilent Jet Stream technology and direct aqueous injection for the analysis of a suite of acidic herbicides in several water matrices, thereby negating the need for solid phase extraction. Standard deviations in the range of 2.5% to 6.6% for analyte precision and recoveries of between 91.5% and 105.1% were observed over 11 batches of samples. Limits of detection were less than 10 ng/L (10 ppt) for all the compounds in the suite thus meeting current industry standards.

This application note successfully demonstrates the selective retention and resolution of low molecular weight sulfur containing species on an Agilent J&W GS-OxyPLOT column. The selective retention for sulfur species enables enough of a retention shift away from hydrocarbon matrices such as base gasoline and n-butane to demonstrate the feasibility of effective quantification of sulfur species in process streams. Using an Agilent J&W GS-OxyPLOT column it is possible to shift the retention of sulfur containing analytes away from a hydrocarbon matrix to achieve effective quantification in the low ppm range.

This document introduces an economical solution to test permanent gases and light hydrocarbons using the Agilent 7820A GC 3-valve system. The Agilent 7820A Gas Chromatograph equipped with three valves, a flame ionization detector (FID), and a thermal conductivity detector (TCD), is configured for analysis of permanent gases and light hydrocarbons. The TCD channel with packed columns is used to measure H2,CO2,O2, N2,CH4 and CO. A capillary column ( Al2O3 PLOT: 50 m × 0.53 mm) is used to measure all hydrocarbons (C1~C6) including CH4.

This document introduces a method for routine detection and quantification of biomarkers in petroleum using the Agilent 7890A/7000A Series Triple Quadrupole GC/MS with backflushing using a Pressure Controlled Tee configuration. In a single run, diverse biomarkers from several transitions can be detected, confirmed, and quantified at levels as low as 2 ppm, with RSDs well below 5%. This method is suitable for “fingerprinting” of petroleum samples and the deconvolution of oil mixtures in complex, multisource petroleum systems.

The document describes the use of Agilent's dual plasma sulfur chemiluminescence detector (DP SCD) and an online dilutor for the analysis of sulfur compounds.
