The mass selective detector is an ideal tool for the analysis of trace level volatile sulfur compounds. Polyvinyl alcohols (PVA) are industrially synthesized by the catalytic reaction of polyvinyl acetates with alcohols, typically methanol. Due to properties such as excellent biological degradeability, water solubility , toxilogical harmlessness they are widely used as emulgators, binding agents in adhesives, salves and haircream. The properties can be varied with the molecular weight distribution and the molecular weight which ranges from 20000 to 100000 g/mol. Both parameters can be fast and reliably monitored by aqueous SEC. This is a convenient method for quality control analyis, and is more informative in production control and end-use performance evaluation than single- point viscosity measurements.

Measuring intraday and interday precision of GPC-SEC analysis data

This paper describes the method of analyzing sulfur anions in Kraft liquors using capillary electrophoresis in the chemical recovery process at a Kraft pulp mill. Sulfur anions, such as sulfate in the black liquor, are converted to sulfide anions in the green liquor. Sulfide anions in the pulping reactions produce stronger paper, but if their concentration is too low, the paper loses its strength, and if the concentration is very high, polluting emissions from the Kraft recovery furnaces are increased. Wet chemical tests and Ion Chromatography (IC) have traditionally been used to analyze process liquors. However, capillary electrophoresis is a suitable replacement for IC due to its benefits of less buffer consumption, less maintenance, and considerably shorter run times.

This document introduces a new product (Application 460B-00) from Agilent Technologies/Wasson-ECE, which uses a 5973N GC/MSD (gas chromatograph/mass selective detector) to determine trace levels of impurities in ethylene and propylene. The product shows comparable performance in terms of linearity and repeatability compared to GC/FID or GC/TCD. The sensitivity of GC/MSD is increased 50-fold compared to GC/FID, and 5000-fold compared to GC/TCD.

This document describes an optimized method for the analysis of sulfur and nitrogen compounds in gasoline- and diesel range materials. The analysis is performed using an Agilent 6890 gas chromatograph (GC) configured with an Agilent G2350A atomic emission detection (AED) system. A 30-m × 0.32-mm, 1-mmmmm HP-1 MS capillary column is used for separation. The method is applicable to low-sulfur gasoline and diesel fuels. Nitrogen compounds can also be determined. The method can be applied to other light gas oil fractions with final boiling points of approximately C25 (402 ºC, 756 ºF). The configuration meets the requirements for determining sulfur in gasoline by ASTM method D 5623. The procedure can be extended to also measure oxygenates, organolead, organomanganese, and fluorine compounds in gasoline and diesel fractions.
