This is an application note for Philips Semiconductors Fault-tolerant CAN Transceiver PCA82C252 / TJA1053 / TJA1054 / TJA1054A
This document offers application‑related information for Philips fault‑tolerant CAN transceivers. It compares the four devices, describes how to upgrade a TJA1053 design to the newer TJA1054, and explains mode‑control operation, power‑supply design, bus termination, and ESD protection.
Additional sections cover series‑resistor recommendations for pins BAT, WAKE and TXD, a hardware design checklist, software design hints, and a detailed FAQ that addresses common issues such as sleep‑mode entry, short‑circuit behavior, and wake‑up requirements.
| Minimum operating voltage | 6 V (PCA82C252, TJA1053), 5 V (TJA1054, TJA1054A) |
|---|---|
| ESD protection rating (pin) | 2 kV Human Body (PCA82C252, TJA1053, TJA1054), 4 kV Human Body (TJA1054A) |
Only the TJA1054 tolerates a CANH‑to‑VCC short circuit; the PCA82C252 and TJA1053 do not support this condition.
The TJA1054 operates down to 5 V and its low‑power current is about 30 µA, compared with 70 µA for the TJA1053, providing lower standby consumption.
