This application note describes the method for detection of nanogram levels of explosive constituents in seawater samples, after explosion of ordnance devices.
This document details an optimized chromatographic method for detecting explosive constituents, such as TNT and hexogen, in seawater samples following ordnance detonations. The method utilizes sample enrichment on Agilent SampliQ PS-DVB cartridges followed by analysis with the Agilent 1290 Infinity LC System.
The study evaluates various RRHD- and RRHT columns to determine optimal selectivity for separating eight specific explosives and an internal standard within a short timeframe. The final optimized method achieves complete separation in approximately 7 minutes using an Agilent ZORBAX Stable Bond CN column, with detection limits improved by the use of a 60-mm cell.
| Separation Time | 7.0 minutes |
|---|---|
| Retention Time Precision | < 0.5% RSD |
| Linearity Range | 0.5 to 50 ng/pL |
| Detection Improvement Factor | 4x |
The Agilent ZORBAX Stable Bond CN column was chosen because it provided the best separation of eight explosives and the internal standard.
Samples are enriched using highly cross-linked polystyrene-divinylbenzene (PS-DVB) cartridges, such as the Agilent SampliQ.
The method allows for the detection of nanogram levels of explosive constituents in seawater samples.
