This document provides an overview of the features and characteristics of the Intel 82503 Dual Serial Transceiver (DST) product, including its Ethernet interface to both 802.3 10BASE-T and AUI, automatic or manual port selection, Manchester Encoder-Decoder and Clock Recovery, no glue interface to industry-standard LAN controllers, diagnostic loopback, low power modes, etc.
The Intel 82503 Dual Serial Transceiver (DST) integrates all active circuitry needed to connect Ethernet LAN controllers to 10BASE‑T, 10BASE‑2 and 10BASE‑5 networks. It provides automatic or manual port selection, polarity correction, link‑integrity monitoring, and a defeatable jabber timer.
The device is offered in 44‑lead PLCC and 44‑lead QFP packages, operates from a 5 V supply, and supports cable lengths up to 200 m in extended squelch mode. Six on‑chip LED drivers give visual status of transmit, receive, collision, link integrity, polarity faults and port selection.

Up to 200 m can be used when the device is in TPE Extended Squelch Mode.
It directly interfaces with Intel 82586, 82590, 82593, 82596, AMD 7990 (LANCE), National Semiconductor 8390/83932 (SONIC), Western Digital 83C690 and Fujitsu 86950 (Etherstar).
