Analysis of Suspected Flavor and Fragrance Allergens in Cosmetics Using the 7890A GC and Capillary Column Backflush Application
The document presents a method for determining flavor and fragrance allergens in cosmetic products using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). The primary challenge addressed is the presence of low-volatility matrix constituents, such as detergents and waxes, which can contaminate the analytical system if samples are introduced without selective preparation.
To solve this, the application proposes an alternative method using a standard split/splitless inlet and Capillary Flow Technology with a QuickSwap device at the column outlet. By controlling the column outlet pressure electronically after the target solutes have eluted, remaining sample components are forced back out of the column head into the split vent trap (backflush). This technique significantly reduces column and detector contamination, eliminates ghost peaks, and increases sample throughput by reducing total analysis time from approximately 14 minutes to 8 minutes.
The inlet pressure is set to 2 psi and the auxiliary pressure is set to 70 psi.
Samples should be placed in an ultrasonic bath for 15 minutes to dissolve the target solutes.
