The Application Note introduces a method for analyzing chitosan molecular weight using GPC/SEC
Chitosan is a naturally occurring polysaccharide used in various applications such as biomedical products, paper production, and waste removal. This document details the use of Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC)/Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC) as a quality control tool to determine the molecular weight (MW) and molecular weight distribution (MWD) of chitosan.

The analysis used a column set comprising 2 x Agilent PL aquagel-OH MIXED-H 8 um columns.
The samples were analyzed in 0.5 M sodium nitrate buffer at low pH.
It provides information on the molecular weight of the polymer, polydispersity, and the shape of the molecular weight distribution.
