Introduces the features and characteristics of MAX481, MAX483, MAX485, MAX487-MAX491, and MAX1487
The MAX481, MAX483, MAX485, MAX487–MAX491, and MAX1487 are low‑power transceivers for RS‑485 and RS‑422 communication. Each device contains a driver and a receiver and operates from a single 5 V supply. The series includes both half‑duplex (MAX481, MAX483, MAX485, MAX487, MAX1487) and full‑duplex (MAX488–MAX491) parts, with data rates up to 2.5 Mbps for the former and up to 250 kbps for the latter.
Key features include reduced‑slew‑rate drivers that minimize EMI, a low‑current shutdown mode (0.1 µA), fail‑safe receiver inputs, and the ability to connect up to 128 transceivers on a bus when using the quarter‑unit‑load receiver inputs of MAX487 and MAX1487. The devices are offered in various packages such as 8‑pin DIP, 14‑pin DIP, SO, and µMAX.
| Supply Voltage (VCC) | 5 V ±5 % |
|---|---|
| Maximum Data Rate (Half‑duplex) | 2.5 Mbps |
| Maximum Data Rate (Full‑duplex) | 250 kbps |
| Quiescent Current (Drivers Disabled) | 120 µA – 500 µA |
| Low‑Current Shutdown Mode Current | 0.1 µA |
| Receiver Input Impedance (MAX487/MAX1487) | Quarter‑unit load |
| Maximum Transceivers on Bus (MAX487/MAX1487) | 128 |
The MAX481 series can transmit at data rates up to 2.5 Mbps.
Up to 128 MAX487 transceivers can be placed on a single bus.
They operate from a single 5 V supply (4.75 V – 5.25 V).
In low‑current shutdown mode the devices draw only 0.1 µA.
