About this manual

This document describes Energy-Aware Programming, a technique allowing programmers to use simulation to analyze the relative impact of instructions and code lines on the estimated energy profile of applications running on the Blackfin processor. The goal is to help developers make trade-offs to optimize for energy efficiency.

The estimation method used is Instruction Level Energy Estimation (ILEE), implemented in the simulators included with VisualDSP++ 4.5. Currently, only instruction base cost is utilized in these estimates, excluding inter-instruction overhead. Base cost measurements were performed on an ADSP-BF533 EZ-KIT Lite evaluation board.

Frequently asked questions

What is the formula for scaling power based on voltage and frequency?

The formula applied to scale power is PDDDYN@V = PDDDYN@V0 * (V/V0)^2 * (F/F0), where V is VDDINT, V0 is 1.2 V, F is CCLK, and F0 is 250 MHz.

What evaluation board was used for base cost measurements?

Base cost measurements were made on an ADSP-BF533 EZ-KIT Lite evaluation board.
