Intersil ICL3237E Datasheet

The ICL3237E is a family of 3.0V to 5.5V powered RS-232 transmitters/receivers that meet ElA/TIA-232 and V.28/V.24 specifications, even at VCC = 3.0V. Additionally, it provides ±15kV ESD protection (IEC61000-4-2 Air Gap and Human Body Model) on transmitter outputs and receiver inputs (RS-232 pins).

About this manual

The ICL3237E is a single‑supply (+3 V to +5.5 V) RS‑232 transmitter/receiver that meets EIA/TIA‑232 and V.28/V.24 specifications. It offers +15 kV ESD protection on all I/O pins, selectable data rates of 250 kbps or 1 Mbps, and a low‑power shutdown mode.

Targeted for battery‑powered handheld devices such as cell phones, PDAs, and notebooks, the device uses only four small external capacitors, achieves a typical 0.8 mA operating current and drops to 10 nA in power‑down, making it ideal for space‑constrained, low‑standby‑current applications.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum data rate of the ICL3237E?

The device supports selectable data rates of up to 1 Mbps in MegaBaud mode.

How many external capacitors are needed for the charge pump?

Only four small external capacitors (0.1 µF or 0.22 µF) are required.

How is the power‑down mode activated?

Power‑down is controlled by the SHDN pin, which is active low to shut down the transmitters and on‑chip supply.

What level of ESD protection does the ICL3237E provide?

The I/O pins are protected up to +15 kV according to IEC61000 standards.
