This document presents a solution for designing a transition mode PFC preregulator using the L6562A. The L6562A is the latest proposal from STMicroelectronics for low and middle power applications such as lamp ballasts, high-end adapters, flat TVs and monitors, and PC power supplies. It is also suitable for emerging markets that may require low-cost power factor correction. Based on a well-established architecture, the L6562A offers excellent performance that considerably enlarges its field of application.

This application note describes a demonstration board based on the transition-mode PFC controller L6562A and presents the results of its bench demonstration. The board implements a 400 W, wide-range mains input PFC pre-conditioner suitable for ATX PSU, flat screen displays, etc. In order to allow the use of a low-cost device like the L6562A at this power level, usually prohibitive for this device, the chip is operated with fixed-off-time control. This allows continuous conduction mode operation, normally achievable with more expensive control chips and more complex control architectures.

This document describes how to implement a constant current control to drive high- brightness LEDs by a step-down DC-DC converter voltage regulator.

The VIPer17 is an offline power converter that integrates an advanced PWM controller with built-in BCD6 technology and an 800V avalanche rugged vertical power MOSFET. The device is suitable for 6W output power with a wide range input voltage (85VAC-270VAC) or 10W output power with a single range input voltage (85VAC-132VAC or 175VAC-265VAC). It offers the advantages of using few external components, providing several switch mode power supply protections, and very low standby consumption in no-load condition.

ST2S06 is a dual synchronous step-down DC-DC converter optimized for powering low-voltage digital cores in ODD applications and, generally, used to replace the high current linear solution when the power dissipation may cause a high heating of the application environment. It provides up to 0.5 A over an input voltage range of 2.5 V to 5.5 V. A high switching frequency (1.5 MHz) allows the use of tiny surface-mount components. A resistor divider to set the output voltage value, an inductor and two capacitors are required for every channel. In addition, a low output ripple is guaranteed by the current mode PWM topology and by the use of low ESR surface-mount ceramic capacitors. The device is thermal protected and current limited to prevent damage due to accidental short-circuit. The family is available in the QFN12L (4x4 mm) package.

This document provides an introduction to the LLC resonant half-bridge converter, its operation, and its benefits. It is suitable for applications such as TVs and PCs.

AN2627 application note introduces the ST8R00 family of synchronous step-up DC-DC converters, which provide up to 1A current output, input voltage range of 4V to 6V, output voltage range of 6V to 12V, switching frequency of 1.2MHz, high switching frequency, can use surface mount small components, use resistor divider to set output voltage value, need inductor and two capacitors, low ESR surface mount ceramic capacitors ensure low output ripple, ST8R00 series converters have two versions, continuous mode ST8R00W and pulse mode ST8R00.

This document describes a high-frequency synchronous 900 kHz step-down converter based on the ST1S10. It is suitable for powering high-voltage LCD applications and low-voltage digital core HDD applications. The converter provides up to 3 A of output current over an input voltage range of 2.5 V to 18 V. It utilizes synchronous rectification to eliminate the need for an external Schottky diode. The high internal switching frequency of 0.9 MHz allows for the use of small surface-mount components and a resistor divider to set the output voltage. Only an inductor and 3 capacitors are required. The converter operates in current PWM mode and provides stable operation with low output ripple using low E.S.R SMD ceramic capacitors. To maximize power conversion efficiency in light load conditions, the converter can automatically switch to burst mode. It can operate in PWM mode at a fixed frequency or synchronize with an external frequency. The switching frequency is 900 kHz when SYNC is connected to ground or a fixed voltage below 5.5 V, and it can be synchronized between 400 kHz and 1.2 MHz using an external clock applied to SYNC. The converter includes a thermal shutdown circuit that activates at 150 °C and cycle-by-cycle current limitation for protection against shorted outputs.
