This article describes the method of designing a low-cost power supply using VIPer12/22A-E in a buck configuration. The power supply is suitable for many applications and can provide power for 12V and 16V outputs. The design features the lowest possible component count, integrated thermal overload protection, approximately 200mW of no-load consumption, and efficiency measured between 70% to 80%.

AN2521 is ST's application note, introducing a 75W wide range input mains and power-factor-corrected ac-dc adapter evaluation board. Its electrical specification is tailored to a typical high-end portable computer power adapter. The distinctive attributes of this design are the very low standby input consumption (< 0.3 W at 265 V), the excellent global efficiency (> 85%) for a two stage architecture and the low cost.

This application note describes the performances of a 400W reference board, with wide-range mains operation and power-factor-correction (PFC) and presents the results of its bench evaluation. The electrical specification refers to a power supply for general purpose application, with two main output voltages (200 V and 75 V). The main features of this design are the very low no-load input consumption (<0.5 W) and the very high global efficiency, better than 90% at full load and nominal mains voltage (115 - 230 VAC).

AN2507 is a ST application note that describes the design of a high power flash LED driver using the STCF03 chip.

AN2492 is an application note about the 400W L6599-based HB LLC resonant converter for PDP application. The note describes the performance, electrical specification, circuit description and electrical test results of the converter.

This application note describes the STEVAL-TSP001V1 demonstration board for the evaluation of a power over Ethernet (PoE) system used to transmit electrical power, along with data, to remote devices over a standard twisted-pair cable in an Ethernet network. A complete power solution for Ethernet-connected powered devices is presented. The power supply fully complies with IEEE 802.3-2005 PoE specifications and delivers the rated output from any compliant source. Example outputs of 3.3 V and 12 V are given in this document, but other requirements can easily be met by implementing small changes.

This application note describes an evaluation board based on the Transition-mode PFC controller L6563 and presents the results of the bench evaluation. The board implements a 400 W, wide-range mains input, a PFC pre-conditioner suitable for ATX PSU, or a flat screen display.

This document provides design guidelines for LLC resonant half-bridge converters, including their high efficiency, low EMI emissions, and high power density.

This application note describes a UWR flyback converter that can be used to supply a DSL Multiplexer. The advantage in using a flyback converter in this application is the moderate variation of the duty cycle with the input voltage. The main drawback is the high value of the rms current in the secondary winding, in the output diode and in the output capacitor.

This application note presents the basic equation of the sepic converter, in addition to design guidelines for a sepic PFC operating in transition mode and using the ripple steering technique. An application example with some tests results and waveforms is also provided in the document.

This document describes a 60W adapter application using the L6668 fixed frequency current mode PWM controller and the STSR30 smart driver for flyback synchronous rectification. This chipset guarantees low no-load consumption and high efficiency, making it easy to comply with world-wide mandatory and voluntary energy saving requirements.

One way to minimize the size and complexity of a battery charger is to use a linear-type charger. The linear charger drops the AC adapter voltage down to the battery voltage. The number of external components is low: linear chargers require input and output bypass capacitors, and sometimes need an external pass transistor, and resistors for setting voltage and current limits. The main pitfall of a linear charger is power dissipation. The charger simply drops the AC adapter voltage down to the battery voltage. In the case of an 800mA charger, a 5V±10% regulated AC adapter voltage, and battery voltage that varies between 4.2V and 2.5V, the power dissipation can range from 0.6W to 2.0W. This type of charger is simpler than the switch-mode type, mainly because the passive LC filter is not required. It dissipates the most power when the battery voltage is at its minimum, since the difference between the fixed input voltage and the battery voltage is greatest during this condition.

This application note describes the performance of a 200 W reference board with wide-range mains operation and power-factor-correction (PFC). Its electrical specification is tailored to a typical high-end application for LCD TV or monitor applications. The main features of this design are the very low no-load input consumption (<0.5 W) and the very high global efficiency, better than 87% at full load and nominal mains voltage (115-230 Vac). The circuit consists of three main blocks; the first is a front-end PFC pre-regulator based on the L6563 PFC controller. The second stage is a multi-resonant half-bridge converter whose control is implemented through the STMicroelectronics L6599 resonant controller. A further auxiliary flyback converter based on the VIPer12A-E off-line primary switcher completes the architecture. This third block is mainly intended for microprocessor supply and display power management operations.

The STM1403/1404 is a family of low power intrusion (tamper) detection security supervisors for the Point of Sale (POS) terminal market. They enable manufacturers to meet security standards such as FIPS-140 (NIST, US Dept. of Commerce), EMV Co, ISO, ZKA (Germany) and Visa PED. Until recently, many of these intrusion detection functions were implemented by using several discrete devices. The STM1403/1404 integrates all these functions into a small profile security-friendly QFN package. The STM1403/1404 meets most price, performance and board space objectives while ensuring customers are able to meet current and future security certification requirements for physical and environmental tamper detection.
