This article introduces the characterization of lavender oil using Agilent J&W DB-1ms Ultra Inert capillary GC columns. Gas phase analytical techniques including GC/MS, GC x GC, and GC/TOF were used to analyze the main components in lavender oil samples from several suppliers. The well-resolved components were then identified using a single quad GC/MS versus NIST Library 5.01, and the identified peaks served as the fingerprint for analysis. The same separation using GC-FID could be used to evaluate subsequent samples quickly and cost effectively. The well-resolved, sharp peaks observed on the Agilent J&W DB-1ms Ultra Inert column made this approach possible.

This paper describes the use of gas chromatography coupled with triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC/MS/MS) to screen pesticides in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) at levels as low as 1 ppb. The Triple Quadrupole mass spec- trometer, when used in Multiple Reaction Monitoring (MRM) mode, can dramatical- ly remove matrix interferences and significantly increase the effective signal-to- noise ratio (S/N).

This Application Note describes a simple, sensitive quantification method for lovastatin in human plasma, based on a liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (LC/ESI/MS/MS) technique. Solid phase extraction was used for the extraction of lovastatin from plasma, and simvastatin was used as the internal standard. For quantification, the triple-quadrupole MS was used in multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode. The monitored transitions were m/z 405.4 to 199.2 for lovastatin and m/z 419.1 to 199.2 for simvastatin. A linearity coefficient of R2 > 0.99 was observed over a wide range of 0.1 ppb to 50 ppb of lovastatin in human plasma. Several methods are currently available for the quantification of this statin, but sensitivity and shorter runtime were the major challenges in those methods. The advantages of the method described here are simplicity, short runtime (1.2 minutes) and better sensitivity through MRM.

This Application Note describes the development of conventional HPLC and Rapid Resolution LC (RRLC) methods for the analysis of Buplerui (Chaihu). A comparison of fingerprint chromatograms of different Buplerui samples showed different peak profiles of different TCMs collected from different places. The method for the Agilent 1200 Series Evaporative Light Scattering Detector (ELSD) was optimized to achieve maximum response. A quantitative method was developed to determine the six types of saikosaponins in different TCMs and their preparations.

This Application Note describes a rapid and sensitive method for quantification of fluvastatin in plasma using the Agilent 1200 Series Rapid Resolution Liquid Chromatography (RRLC) system and the Agilent 6410 Triple Quadrupole LC/MS system. Sample preparation was carried out by a simple protein precipitation step. Atorvastatin at 40 ng/mL was used as the internal standard. The developed method had a short run time of two minutes and was found to be linear in the concentration range of 0.5 ng/mL to 200 ng/mL. The limit of detection (LOD) of the method is 0.2 ng/mL, or 1 pg on-column.

This Application Note describes a new quantitative method for the determination of ultratrace elemental impurities present in photovoltaic grade silicon using the Agilent 7500cs ICP-MS. Boron (volatile element) and phosphorus (subject to Si-based interferences) are of particular importance to the industry; therefore, special attention was given to the sample pretreatment stage in order to analyze these elements by ICP-MS. Good recov- ery results for all elements validated the sample preparation strategy. Example data for a range of elements present in 13 different Si samples is presented, along with a list of detection limits. B and P can be determined at the low ppb level in the solid and other elements studied can be measured at the ppt level.

This application note describes a method for rapid analytical separation and quantification of human polyclonal IgG using the Agilent Bio-Monolith Protein A HPLC column. The method is applicable to the separation of IgG from complex mixtures and can also be used to monitor fermentation titers throughout large scale IgG production.

This article describes a simple, robust and reliable method for the measurement of 21 trace elements in high-purity ammonium paratungstate (APT) using an Agilent 7500cx ICP-MS fitted with a High Matrix Introduction (HMI) system. HMI is a new sample-introduction accessory specially designed for concentrated samples with high total dissolved solids (TDS). Comparing results obtained using different APT sample digestion methods shows that dissolving the material in heated 4% H2O2 minimizes the formation of interferences on difficult elements such as phosphorus and silicon. APT samples containing 1% TDS were analyzed directly using the HMI's ultra robust mode. Results were calculated using the method of standard addition (MSA). Interferences on challenging elements such as Ca, K, Fe, and Si were removed by the Octopole Reaction System (ORS), a standard component of the Agilent 7500cx. The short turnaround time, including sample preparation and analy- sis time, indicates that the method is suitable for onsite testing.
