63Nickel Electron Capture Detector Radioactive Leak Wipe Test Kit Instructions
This document provides instructions for the Radioactive Leak Wipe Test required by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for Electron Capture Detectors (ECDs) containing a 63Ni source. The test must be performed at intervals not exceeding six months, starting no later than six months from the date on the wipe test certificate accompanying a new ECD.
The guide details the contents of the Wipe Test Kit (Part No. 18713-60050), safety precautions regarding the low-energy beta-emitter 63Ni, and step-by-step procedures for collecting samples from different parts of the detector (inlet, housing, exit) for various Agilent GC models including the 6890, 5890, and 5880.
| Radionuclide Source | 63Ni |
|---|---|
| Maximum Beta Energy | 0.067 MeV |
| Test Interval | not to exceed 6 months |
| NRC Wipe Limit | 0.005 microcuries |
The user's first leak test should be performed no later than 6 months from the date on the wipe test certificate accompanying the new ECD.
Users should use disposable plastic gloves when taking samples and wash hands thoroughly with soap and water upon completion to prevent internalizing the radionuclide.
