The ’HC4040 and ’HCT4040 are 14-stage ripple-carry binary counters. All counter stages are master-slave flip- flops. The state of the stage advances one count on the negative clock transition of each input pulse; a high voltage level on the MR line resets all counters to their zero state. All inputs and outputs are buffered.
The CD54/74HC4040 and CD54/74HCT4040 devices are 12‑stage ripple‑carry binary counters built with fully static CMOS logic. All stages use master‑slave flip‑flops, feature buffered inputs and outputs, and support negative‑edge clocking. The common reset line clears all stages to zero, and the parts are available in CERDIP, PDIP and SOIC packages.
The datasheet provides absolute maximum ratings, DC electrical specifications, and switching performance for both HC and HCT families. Typical operation is up to 60 MHz at 5 V supply with a 15 pF load, and propagation delays range from 140 ns to 210 ns depending on load and temperature. The devices operate from –55 °C to 125 °C and support a wide supply voltage range (2 V‑6 V for HC, 4.5 V‑5.5 V for HCT).
| Typical operating frequency | 60 MHz at VCC = 5 V, CL = 15 pF |
|---|---|
| Operating temperature range | -55 °C to 125 °C |
| Supply voltage range (HC types) | 2 V to 6 V |
The device typically operates at 60 MHz when powered at 5 V with a 15 pF load.
