The MAX7318 2-wire-interfaced expander provides 16-bit parallel input/output (I/O) port expansion for SMBus™ and I2C applications. The MAX7318 consists of input port registers, output port registers, polarity inversion registers, configuration registers, and an I2C-compatible serial interface logic compatible with SMBus. The system master can invert the MAX7318 input data by writing to the active-high polarity inversion register. Any of the 16 I/O ports can be configured as an input or output. A power-on reset (POR) initializes the 16 I/Os as inputs. Three address select pins configure one of 64 slave ID addresses. The MAX7318 supports hot insertion. All port pins, the INT output, SDA, SCL, and the slave address inputs AD0–2 remain high impedance in power-down (V+ = 0V) with up to 6V asserted upon them. The MAX7318 is available in 24-pin SO, SSOP, TSSOP, and thin QFN packages and is specified over the -40°C to +125°C automotive temperature range. For applications requiring an SMBus timeout function, refer to the MAX7311 data sheet.

SN54AC86 and SN74AC86 are quadruple 2-input exclusive-OR gates. The devices perform the Boolean function Y = A⊕B or Y = AB+AB in positive logic. A common application is as a true/complement element. If one of the inputs is low, the other input is reproduced in true form at the output. If one of the inputs is high, the signal on the other input is reproduced inverted at the output.

The DS4550 is a 9-bit, nonvolatile (NV) I/O expander with 64 bytes of NV user memory controlled by either an I2C-compatible serial interface or an IEEE 1149.1 JTAG port. The DS4550 offers a digitally programmable alternative to hardware jumpers and mechanical switches that are being used to control digital logic nodes. Each I/O pin is independently configurable. The outputs are open drain with selectable pullups. Each output has the ability to sink up to 16mA, and since the device is NV, it powers up in the desired state allowing it to control digital logic inputs immediately on power- up without having to wait for the host CPU to initiate control.

The MAX7327 is a 2-wire serial interface peripheral that features 12 push-pull outputs and four configurable open-drain I/O ports with selectable internal pullups and transition detection. Ports are overvoltage protected to +6V, independent of supply voltage. The four I/O ports configured as inputs are continuously monitored for state changes (transition detection). State changes are indicated by the open-drain, +6V-tolerant INT output. The interrupt is latched, detecting transient changes. When the MAX7327 is subsequently accessed through the serial interface, any pending interrupt is cleared. The 12 push-pull and the four open-drain outputs are rated to sink 20mA, and are capable of driving LEDs. The RST input clears the serial interface, terminating any I2C communication to or from the MAX7327. The MAX7327 uses two address inputs with four-level logic to allow 16 I2C slave addresses. The slave address also determines the power-up logic state for the I/O ports, and enables or disables internal 40kΩ pullups in groups of two ports. The MAX7327 is one device in a family of pin-compatible port expanders with a choice of input ports, open-drain I/O ports, and push-pull output ports (see Table 1). The MAX7327 is available in the 24-pin QSOP and TQFN packages, and is specified over the -40°C to +125°C automotive temperature range. The MAX7325 is one device in a family of pin-compatible port expanders with a choice of input ports, open-drain I/O ports, and push-pull output ports (see Table 1).
