About this manual

The LM117HV/LM317HV series are adjustable 3‑terminal positive voltage regulators that can supply more than 1.5 A over a 1.2 V to 57 V output range. They require only two external resistors to set the output voltage and include built‑in current limit, thermal overload, safe‑area and short‑circuit protection. The devices are available in standard TO‑3, TO‑39 and TO‑220 packages and operate from –55 °C to +150 °C (LM117HV) or 0 °C to +125 °C (LM317HV).

Typical applications include precision current regulation, programmable switching regulators, and high‑voltage supplies where the regulator is “floating”. The datasheet provides recommended external bypass capacitors, ripple‑rejection techniques, and layout guidelines to achieve the best load and line regulation performance.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum output current of the LM117HV?

The LM117HV can deliver up to 1.5 A of output current.

What external capacitors are recommended for the LM117HV?

An input bypass capacitor of 0.1 µF disc or 1 µF solid tantalum is recommended, and a 1 µF solid tantalum output capacitor improves stability and ripple rejection.

What is the allowable input‑output voltage differential?

The device can tolerate a differential of up to +60 V and down to –0.3 V.
