Agilent Technologies Multiple Headspace Extraction-Capillary Gas Chromatography for the Quantitative Determination of Volatiles in Solid Matrices Application

A multiple headspace extraction capillary gas chromatographic (MHE-CGC) method for the quantitative, accurate, and rapid determination of volatile components in solids such as polymers, resins, and activated carbon has been developed. A five-step MHE determination was performed using the Agilent 7694 headspace sampler and a 5890 Series II GC with EPC. A Microsoft® Excel spreadsheet was used to quickly perform the required calculations. Details of the procedure and implications affecting the analysis of polymeric materials are discussed.

Agilent Technologies Using a Mass Selective Chemical Sensor to Help Identify Unknowns Application

Agilent Technologies has developed a chemical sensor, the Agilent 4440A, which can rapidly distinguish among similar products with volatile constituents. The instrument consists of a modified Agilent headspace autosampler coupled directly to a modified Agilent mass selective detector. Unlike headspace gas chromatography with mass selective detection (HS/GC/MS), this system has no GC, and there is virtually no separation of the volatile constituents. Instead, the headspace volatiles are transferred directly to the mass selective sensor, which typically gives rise to a single broad peak composed of all the volatile constituents in the sample. Because the mass spectra of all these compounds are also overlaid, multivariate analysis and pattern recognition software are used to classify the samples. The advantages of this system over conventional HS/GC or HS/GC/MS are its speed and ease of use. Samples can be analyzed every 2 to 6 minutes, depending upon the amount of headspace equilibration time required, and operator training takes less than an hour. This application note discusses how the 4440A chemical sensor has been used to discriminate among various products. Most interestingly, this application note also shows how to use the information from the 4440A chemical sensor to identify unknowns.

Agilent Retention Time Locking Using USP 467 Standard Sample Automated Headspace Sampling

This application note describes how to use Agilent Technologies’ retention time locking (RTL) software to match the retention time of an automated headspace GC system with that of a standard sample. RTL software allows the retention times of any Agilent 6890 Series or Agilent 6850 gas chromatograph (GC) system to be matched precisely to those of any other, as long as the systems are equipped with electronic pneumatics control. The results from different systems are virtually identical, independent of inlet, detector, operator, or location.

This article discusses how to increase the maximum achievable oven program rate by reducing the GC oven volume to shorten the GC analysis time. Comparisons were made between the Agilent 6890 Plus GC with Oven Insert and the Agilent 6850 Series GC, showing a dramatic increase in oven program rate with the use of the 6890 GC oven insert.
