The FT232R is a USB to serial UART interface with optional clock generator output, and the new FTDIChip-ID™ security dongle feature. In addition, asynchronous and synchronous bit bang interface modes are available.
The FT232R is a USB‑to‑serial UART interface IC that includes an optional clock generator output and the FTDIChip‑ID™ security dongle feature. It supports asynchronous and synchronous bit‑bang modes, configurable CBUS I/O pins, and integrates EEPROM, USB resistors, and level converters on‑chip, reducing external component count.
The device is offered in RoHS‑compliant 28‑lead SSOP (FT232RL) and ultra‑compact 5 mm × 5 mm QFN‑32 (FT232RQ) packages. It operates from 3.3 V to 5.25 V, across –40 °C to +85 °C, and provides up to 3 Megabaud data rates with low power consumption.
| Clock output frequencies | 6 MHz, 12 MHz, 24 MHz, 48 MHz |
|---|---|
| Supply voltage range | 3.3 V – 5.25 V |
| Operating temperature range | -40 °C to +85 °C |
| Receive buffer size | 256 bytes |
| Transmit buffer size | 128 bytes |
| Internal EEPROM size | 1024 bits |
| USB speed compatibility | USB 2.0 Full Speed |
The FT232R can output clock signals at 6 MHz, 12 MHz, 24 MHz, or 48 MHz.
Each FT232R contains a unique FTDIChip‑ID™ burnt into the device, readable over USB for use as a security dongle.
It operates from 3.3 V up to 5.25 V.
