About this manual

Metcal’s MX‑500 series combines a high‑frequency power supply, SmartHeat® tip cartridges and ergonomic hand‑pieces to deliver constant tip temperature and fast joint‑to‑joint heating. The system supports both SMT and through‑hole work, with switchable outputs and optional accessories such as Talon® tweezers and workstands.

SmartHeat® technology automatically adjusts power to maintain a set temperature within ±1.1 °C, eliminating the need for manual calibration and reducing the risk of component damage. The MX‑500 family includes soldering, desoldering and rework configurations, each with two‑port power supplies and optional air‑driven vacuum for rapid hole cleaning.

Frequently asked questions

What is SmartHeat® technology?

SmartHeat® maintains a constant tip temperature by automatically adjusting power to match the thermal load, ensuring consistent soldering results.

Do I need to calibrate a SmartHeat® system?

No, SmartHeat® systems do not require calibration because the tip cartridge’s alloy sets the temperature automatically.
