This document describes the features and characteristics of the Avago Versatile Link family of connectors and fiber optic components. It provides two grades of Plastic Optical Fiber (POF), including low cost standard POF and high performance extra low loss POF. Applications include industrial data links for factory automation and plant control, intra-system links, telecommunications switching systems, computer-to-peripheral data links, proprietary LANs, digitized video, medical instruments, reduction of lightning and voltage transient susceptibility, and high voltage isolation.
The document describes the HFBR-R/EXXYYYZ series of plastic optical fiber (POF) cables, which are single‑step‑index fibers sheathed in a black polyethylene jacket. Two grades are offered: a standard POF with typical attenuation of 0.22 dB/m and an extra‑low‑loss POF with 0.19 dB/m. The cables comply with UL VW‑1 flame‑retardant specifications and are available in unconnectored or connectored configurations.
Four connector styles (simplex, simplex latching, duplex, duplex latching) are detailed, along with mechanical and optical characteristics, installation instructions, and an ordering guide. The guide lists part numbers, color‑coding conventions (gray for transmitters, blue for receivers), and mechanical dimensions for adapters and bulkhead feedthroughs.
| Standard POF attenuation | 0.22 dB/m typical |
|---|---|
| Extra‑low‑loss POF attenuation | 0.19 dB/m typical |
| Numerical Aperture (NA) | 0.46‑0.50 |
| Core diameter | 0.94‑1.06 mm |
| Jacket diameter | 2.13‑2.27 mm |
| Propagation delay constant | 5.0 ns/m |
| Short‑term tensile force (single channel) | 50 N |
| Short‑term bend radius | 25 mm |
The recommended nut torque is 0.57 N‑m.
Gray connectors are used on the transmitter side and blue connectors on the receiver side.
The bulkhead adapter can be installed in panels up to 4.1 mm (0.16 in) thick.
The standard POF cable has a typical attenuation of 0.22 dB/m.
