This report describes geophysical methods and tools, including the Scintrex ENVI-MAG system, for expedited environmental site characterization.
This document is a technical report titled "Expedited Site Characterization Geophysics" authored by Norman E. Goldstein at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Published in March 1994, it details nonintrusive or minimally intrusive surface geophysical methods used for environmental site characterization projects supported by the U.S. Department of Energy.
The report covers five classes of geophysical technologies: Magnetics, Electrical/Electromagnetic, Seismic Reflection, Gamma-Ray Spectrometry, and Metal-Specific Spectrometry. It provides descriptions, applications, limitations, data analysis methods, and available instrumentation for each method. Specific attention is given to the ENVI-MAG Environmental Magnetometer/Gradiometer System manufactured by Scintrex.
| Manufacturer of ENVI-MAG | Scintrex, Concord, Ontario, Canada |
|---|---|
| Internal storage capacity (Gradiometer system) | 28,000 readings |
| Maximum internal storage (expandable) | 200,000 readings |
The goal is to reduce restoration costs by decreasing the time required to acquire, process, interpret, and synthesize chemical and hydrogeologic data needed to characterize a site.
The device measures the scalar total magnetic field and/or its vertical gradient.
