About this manual

The DMA Controller of the Analog Devices SHARC family processors does not automatically DMA 16-bit data from external memory to internal memory. However, this document describes a method to accomplish 16-bit data transfers by packing them into 32-bit words, which can then be transferred using standard DMA. Once in internal memory, the data is accessed as short word memory.

Frequently asked questions

What processor family does this note describe?

The document describes the Analog Devices SHARC family of processors.

How is 16-bit data packed to fit into a 32-bit transfer?

The external port and serial port DMA channels have a packing capability allowing 16 bit data to be packed to 32 bits.

What is the example size of the source buffer in the assembly code?

The sample code defines a source array with a size of 8 elements (2*N where N=4).
