About this manual

The MAX8880 and MAX8881 are low‑dropout, low‑quiescent‑current linear regulators designed for battery‑powered applications. The MAX8880 offers an adjustable output from 1.25 V to 5 V, while the MAX8881 provides fixed outputs of 1.8 V, 2.5 V, 3.3 V, or 5 V. Both devices feature a 2 Ω P‑channel MOSFET pass transistor, internal short‑circuit, thermal overload, and reverse‑battery protection, and include a POK output for out‑of‑regulation indication.

Typical applications include smoke detectors, battery‑powered alarms, remote transmitters, smart battery packs, PDAs, and handheld terminals. The regulators are supplied in 6‑pin SOT‑23 and 6‑pin TDFN packages and are stable with output capacitors as low as 1 µF.

Frequently asked questions

What is the supply current of the MAX8880 at 12 V?

The MAX8880 draws only 3.5 µA of supply current when VIN is 12 V.

What packages are the MAX8880/MAX8881 available in?

Both devices are offered in 6‑pin SOT‑23 and 6‑pin TDFN packages.

What is the purpose of the POK output?

The open‑drain POK output provides an error flag that goes low when the output is out of regulation or in shutdown.
