About this manual

The Maxim MAX1480A/B/C and MAX1490A/B families provide complete, electrically isolated RS‑485/RS‑422 data‑communication interfaces in standard DIP packages. The devices combine transceivers, optocouplers and a transformer, and are powered by a single +5 V supply on the logic side.

These parts are offered in 28‑pin (MAX1480) and 24‑pin (MAX1490) DIP packages, support half‑duplex (MAX1480) or full‑duplex (MAX1490) operation, and feature short‑circuit current limiting with thermal shutdown. They are rated for up to 1600 VRMS (1 min) or 2000 VRMS (1 s) isolation and are suitable for industrial‑control LANs, test equipment and HVAC networks.
