About this manual

The Grosskraftwerk Mannheim (GKM) coal‑fired power plant modernized two of its three boiler feed pumps by installing ABB ACS 1000 medium‑voltage AC drives in air‑conditioned containers. The drives replaced hydraulic clutches and a turbo clutch, providing direct speed control to the pump motors.

The installation delivered a 25% reduction in energy consumption, an annual saving of about €300,000 per pump, and a CO₂ emission reduction of roughly 850 kg per hour. The ACS 1000 achieved an efficiency of 98.5 % and, together with high‑efficiency transmission and transformers, raised the overall pump drive system efficiency above 98 %.
