TL16C550A Asynchronous Communications Element is a FIFO-capable communication element that can run with all existing TL16C450 software.
The TL16C550A is an asynchronous communications element (ACE) designed as a functional upgrade for the TL16C450. It supports both standard character mode and a high-efficiency FIFO mode with 16-byte buffers for both transmitter and receiver to reduce CPU interrupts. The device includes a programmable baud rate generator capable of dividing a reference clock by 1 to (2^16 - 1) and generating an internal 16x clock for data transmission and reception.
Key features include support for 5 to 8-bit characters, various parity and stop bit configurations, and complete modem control functions such as CTS, RTS, DSR, DTR, RI, and DCD. The chip offers internal diagnostic capabilities like loopback controls and error simulation, along with a fully prioritized interrupt system. It is available in N and FN packages with 3-state TTL drive capabilities.
