This is an instruction manual, which introduces the use of the HI 96822 Seawater Refractometer product
The HI 96822 is a rugged, portable, water-resistant digital refractometer designed to measure the salinity of natural and artificial seawater. It utilizes an optical device with a linear image sensor to determine the critical angle of light refraction, converting this data into Practical Salinity Units (PSU), parts per thousand (PPT), or Specific Gravity (S.G.).
The instrument features Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC) for temperatures between 0 and 40 °C. It includes a large dual-level LCD display showing measurements and temperature, along with helpful message codes. Key operational aspects include daily calibration using distilled water, battery operation with low-power indicators, and an auto-off function after three minutes of non-use.
| Range (PSU/PPT/SG) | 0 to 50 / 0 to 150 / 1.000 to 1.114 |
|---|---|
| Temperature Range | 0 to 80 °C (32 to 176 °F) |
| Resolution | 0.001 PSU, 0.1 PPT, 0.002 SG |
| Accuracy (PSU) | +2 PSU |
| Temperature Compensation | Automatic between 0 and 40 °C |
| Measurement Time | Approximately 1.5 seconds |
| Minimum Sample Volume | 100 µL |
| Battery Life | 5000 readings |
| Enclosure Rating | IP 65 |
Calibration should be performed daily, before measurements are made, when the battery has been replaced, or if environmental changes have occurred.
The instrument requires a minimum of 100 µL to cover the prism totally.
If the temperature exceeds 40 °C, automatic temperature compensation is disabled and the 'ATC' tag blinks.
The device operates on a single 9V battery.
