About this manual

The ISL29002 integrates a photodiode pair and a charge‑balancing integrating ADC to convert ambient light from 1 lux to 100 000 lux into a digital output via a standard I2C interface. It includes a metal‑covered diode for dark‑output cancellation and can be used for backlight control, display dimming and portable illumination management.

Key specifications include a supply voltage of 2.25 V–3.63 V, normal supply current under 300 µA (88 µA in software‑down mode), operation from –40 °C to +85 °C, and a 8‑lead ODFN package. The device offers selectable I2C addresses (0x40‑0x47), up to 15‑bit effective ADC resolution, and adjustable integration times from 50 ms to 550 ms.

Frequently asked questions

What I2C address range can the ISL29002 use?

The three address pins (A0‑A2) set the low three bits, giving eight possible addresses from 0x40 to 0x47.

How much current does the sensor draw in normal operation?

It consumes less than 300 µA of supply current during normal operation.

What is the recommended external resistor for the internal timing mode?

A 100 kΩ resistor (1 % tolerance) is recommended for the internal timing mode.

What is the typical integration time for internal timing mode?

The internal timing mode provides a fixed integration time of 110 ms per photodiode.
