The new ACS 800 model of ABB's electromagnetic stirrer brings good savings for Ovako Bar Oy Ab's ladle furnace. The old YOQD driver needed to be replaced with ABB's modern ACS 800 driver due to difficulty in obtaining necessary spare parts. The main reason for this investment was to ensure uninterrupted production, as all production in Ovako Imatra relies on this stirrer. All failures in the old driver would reduce or stop production. The new ACS 800 was commissioned in 2006. The dismounting of the old driver and installation of the new ACS 800 posed a great challenge, but thanks to a good relationship and cooperation between ABB and Ovako Imatra, it was successfully completed.
ABB replaced the aging YOQD analogue drive of Ovako's electromagnetic stirrer with a modern ACS 800 drive. The old drive was difficult to maintain, spare parts were scarce, and adjustments were cumbersome, prompting the upgrade in 2006.
The new ACS 800 was installed in parts due to transport constraints, and since commissioning there have been no breakdowns. Ovako reported space savings, easier access to spare parts, and overall cost savings, while ABB highlighted the smooth cooperation between its Service teams in Finland and its Center of Excellence in Sweden.
Ovako saw space savings, easier spare‑part access, good cost savings, and no recorded breakdowns since the ACS 800 was commissioned.
