This application note introduces the EVAL-ADUSB2EBZ and describes its features and usage. The EVAL-ADUSB2EBZ is a USB-to-I2C and SPI converter that allows SigmaStudio™ integration for most SigmaDSP® processors. It features a standard Aardvark-compatible programming header and can provide SPI control of up to five slave devices.

This application note describes a high-accuracy, low-cost power meter based on the ADE7756. The design is for use in the North American 3-wire/single-phase application. This meter may also be used in a single-phase, 2-wire distribution system with a minimal amount of changes. The reference design is comprised of the ADE7756, a microcontroller, LCD display, serial interface, and power supply. The ADE7756 is designed to interface to a microcontroller through a serial interface (SPI). The SPI port allows the user to calibrate various components of the meter, including gain, offset, and phase errors. The purpose of the microcontroller is to send display data to the LCD and control the various functions of the meter. An EEPROM is used to store various calibration parameters of the meter and store the meter’s data during a power-down. The entire meter is calibrated through an external calibration routine by a PC through an external SPI interface. The ADE7756 is comprised of two ADCs, a reference circuit, and all the signal processing necessary for the calculation of real (active) power. Circuitry is provided to null out various system errors including gain, phase, and offset errors.

The AD7607 is a 14-bit, bipolar input, 8-channel simultaneous sampling data acquisition module (DAS) with fast throughput rate and low power consumption. The module is powered by a single supply, has power short circuit protection, and supports SPI, QSPI™, MICROWIRE™ and DSP compatible serial interfaces, and provides 14-bit to 18-bit compatible solutions.

This application note describes a technique to evaluate DUT noise by removing external noise sources. A residual phase noise setup is used to isolate and measure the additive phase noise contribution of a device. Designers use this information to select individual devices for their signal chain, which, in aggregate, meet the phase noise requirements for their complete system. The benefit of a residual phase noise setup is that the effect of noise sources external to the device under test (DUT), such as power supplies or input clocks, can be canceled from the measurement. Conversely, an absolute phase noise measurement includes the impact of power supply noise and reference clock noise. This application note includes actual phase noise measurement plots of a clocked device to highlight the attributes of the residual phase noise setup. In addition, it demonstrates how the additive phase noise of a device can be used to identify the source of noise-related issues in the signal chain.
