STMicroelectronics VKO6 Application Note AN1902

This document describes a reference design for Lighting Ballast dedicated to drive 58W T8 tubes. The board accepts DC input voltage (up to 430V) realizing the cathodes preheating, the EoL protection and the maximum current limitation. It is based on the new VK06 device that integrates the controller and the Power stage on the same chip. It is housed in SO-16 and SIP-9 packages.

About this manual

The document presents a reference design for an electronic ballast dedicated to driving 58W T8 fluorescent tubes. The design utilizes the VKO6 monolithic device, which integrates a vertical flow power stage and a BCD-based control circuit on a single chip housed in SO-16 or SIP-9 packages.

The note details the internal architecture of the VKO6, including its supply, oscillator/trigger, diac, and protection blocks. It explains how the device manages cathode preheating, end-of-life (EoL) protection, and maximum current limitation. Additionally, it provides a typical application circuit diagram and describes the four operative phases: start-up, preheat, steady state, and ignition.
