Hitachi Drive Fitness Test Usage Instructions Manual

DFT (Drive Fitness Test) is a hard disk testing tool provided by Hitachi. It supports Windows and Linux operating systems. DFT can be used to perform quick tests and advanced tests on hard drives, and to perform operations such as erasing the boot sector and erasing the hard drive. DFT also supports S.M.A.R.T operations, which can be used to view the operating status of the hard disk.

About this manual

The Drive Fitness Test (DFT) is a DOS‑based utility that lets you test hard‑disk drives while they remain inside a PC, even if the operating system is not bootable. It performs non‑destructive checks, reports drive health, and can enable/disable S.M.A.R.T., erase the master boot sector, or fully erase user data.

The manual details how to create a bootable floppy or CD media on Windows or Linux, explains hardware support and restrictions for ATA, Serial‑ATA, and SCSI drives, lists required ASPI managers for SCSI controllers, and provides troubleshooting steps for common issues such as ASPI load failures or PCI IDE adapter detection problems.
