MAX6958/MAX6959 is a multiplexed common cathode display driver that interfaces microprocessors to seven-segment numeric LED digits, or discrete LEDs through an SMBus™- and I2C-compatible 2-wire serial interface.
The MAX6958 and MAX6959 are compact multiplexed common‑cathode LED display drivers that interface to microprocessors via an SMBus™/I²C‑compatible 2‑wire serial bus. They can drive up to four 7‑segment digits with optional decimal points, plus up to 36 discrete LEDs, and the MAX6959 adds two configurable input ports for key‑scan of up to eight switches.
The devices operate from 3 V to 5.5 V, feature a 64‑step digital brightness control, a low‑power shutdown mode (125 µA typical), and are specified for the automotive temperature range of –40 °C to +125 °C. They are offered in 16‑pin PDIP and QSOP packages and support a 400 kbps serial clock rate.
| Operating Supply Voltage (V+) | 3 V – 5.5 V |
|---|---|
| Peak Segment Current | 23 mA |
| Brightness Control Steps | 64 steps |
| Serial Interface Speed | 400 kbps |
| Maximum LEDs Driven | Up to 36 discrete LEDs |
| Key‑scan Switch Capacity | Up to 8 switches (MAX6959 only) |
| Package Types | 16‑pin PDIP and QSOP |
The driver can control up to 36 discrete LEDs, or four 7‑segment digits plus four or eight discrete LEDs depending on the use of decimal points.
The 2‑wire serial interface supports up to 400 kbps.
