The MAX7219/MAX7221 are compact, serial input/output common-cathode display drivers that interface microprocessors (µPs) to 7-segment numeric LED dis- plays of up to 8 digits, bar-graph displays, or 64 indi- vidual LEDs.
The MAX7219 and MAX7221 are compact serial‑input, common‑cathode LED display drivers that interface microprocessors to up to eight 7‑segment digits, bar‑graph displays, or 64 individual LEDs. They include on‑chip BCD code‑B decoding, multiplex scan circuitry, segment and digit drivers, and an 8×8 static RAM for storing each digit. Only a single external resistor is required to set segment current.
The devices support SPI, QSPI, and MICROWIRE interfaces, feature slew‑rate‑limited segment drivers (MAX7221), low‑power shutdown mode, analog and digital brightness control, and a test mode that forces all LEDs on. Applications include panel meters, LED matrix displays, bar‑graph displays, and industrial controllers.
| Interface Types | SPI, QSPI, MICROWIRE |
|---|---|
| Maximum Supply Voltage (V+) | 5.5 V |
| Display Scan Rate | 500–1300 Hz |
The devices operate up to 5.5 V on the V+ supply pin.
Both the MAX7219 and MAX7221 can drive up to eight digits.
The devices support SPI, QSPI, and MICROWIRE serial interfaces.
