This document introduces the knowledge about 5.1 surround sound system, including the differences between mono, stereo and surround sound, channel configuration or format, speaker installation and arrangement, etc.
This application note explains the fundamentals of 5.1 surround sound broadcasting and production, covering channel configurations, encoding formats and the role of metadata. It also describes how engineers can evaluate and calibrate speaker systems using NTi Audio measurement equipment.
Practical guidance is provided for speaker installation, SPL matching, low‑frequency boost, and measuring transparency and delay with devices such as the Acoustilyzer AL1 and Digirator DR2. The note includes references to standards and further reading for audio professionals. This manual is written in Chinese.
| Speaker SPL tolerance | ±0.5 dB across 100‑10 kHz |
|---|---|
| Low‑frequency speaker boost | 10 dB higher than other channels in 20‑120 Hz |
| Delay range | 4‑600 ms |
All speakers should be placed in a circle around the listening area with the listener at the centre.
The Acoustilyzer AL1 can measure SPL, equivalent noise level and store results for later analysis.
