The Harte Technologies Super I/O Controller User Guide provides hardware installation, software setup, and configuration instructions for the IEEE‑696 bus…
The HarteTec Super I/O Controller provides a complete I/O subsystem for the IEEE‑696 (S‑100) bus, supporting both 8‑bit and enhanced 16‑bit address decoding, DMA floppy access, and a range of peripheral interfaces. It includes two floppy‑drive options, two UARTs, a parallel port, PS/2 keyboard/mouse, two IDE channels, a battery‑backed RTC, and 128 KB of flash memory.
This manual covers system requirements, hardware installation with jumper settings, software installation, IDE drive setup, CP/M diskette handling, flash ROM programming, compatibility notes for S‑100 processor and memory cards, and configuration of common PC communications programs such as MS‑DOS Kermit and HyperTerminal.
| Floppy drive support | Two drives, any combination of 3.5", 5.25" or 8" |
|---|---|
| 3.5‑inch floppy capacities | 2.88 MB, 1.44 MB, 720 KB |
| 5.25‑inch floppy capacities | 1.2 MB, 360 KB, DS/HD, DS/DD, SS/DD, SS/SD |
| 8‑inch floppy support | Single or Double‑Density |
| UARTs | Two NS16550‑compatible UARTs |
| Parallel port | One IEEE‑1284‑compatible port |
| Keyboard/Mouse controller | PS/2‑compatible |
| IDE channels | Two independent channels, up to two devices each |
| Real‑time clock | Battery‑backed RTC with non‑volatile RAM |
| Flash memory | 128 KB with banked memory support |
| Address decoding | 8‑bit and enhanced 16‑bit decoding |
| DMA support | Floppy DMA via MPU‑C board |
A jumper must be installed between pins 7 and 9 to allow the controller to operate without a DMA controller.
The default settings are 9,600 baud, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, and no flow control.
MS‑DOS Kermit runs under MS‑DOS, Windows 9x, Windows Me, and Windows NT/2000/XP.
