A review of the development, composition, microstructure, performance and applications of hot‑dip zinc‑aluminum‑magnesium coatings.
The paper surveys two decades of progress in hot‑dip zinc‑aluminum‑magnesium (Zn‑Al‑Mg) coatings, describing how variations in Al and Mg content create three alloy families – low‑Al, medium‑Al and high‑Al – and how these affect corrosion resistance, friction coefficient and hardness. It also summarizes the commercial products and production lines introduced by major steelmakers worldwide.
Baosteel’s own research since 2008 is highlighted, showing successful pilot production of low‑Al and high‑Al Zn‑Al‑Mg coated steel sheets, their superior corrosion performance, and potential for automotive body applications despite higher processing challenges. This manual is written in Chinese.
| Coating weight reduction compared with pure Zn coating | 30 % – 50 % |
|---|---|
| Al content categories | Low Al (<5 wt %), Medium Al (5 % – 13 wt %), High Al (13 % – 20 wt %) |
The coatings are classified as low‑Al, medium‑Al and high‑Al based on the Al percentage in the alloy.
