This application note introduces some of the power saving modes available in the STM8L microcontroller family
This document introduces power saving modes available in the STM8L microcontroller family. It utilizes the built-in Ipp (supply current) measurement feature of the STM8L-DISCOVERY evaluation board to dynamically display real-time power consumption values without requiring additional hardware.
The application demonstrates measurements for Run mode, Low Power Run (LPR) with and without LCD display, and Halt modes. It also includes procedures for recording bias current to compensate for operational amplifier errors and performing a manufacturing test for device diagnosis.
The application uses the STM8L-DISCOVERY on-board LEDs, 6-digit/4-bar LCD glass display, and user push-button; no additional components are required.
In low power modes, a counter enabled by the STM8L manages timing while idle. A capacitor stores the measurement charge so the microcontroller can display the value early upon wake-up.
