About this manual

The LTC488 and LTC489 are low‑power differential bus/line receivers designed for multipoint RS485 and RS422 applications. They operate from a single 5 V supply, draw only 7 mA typical current, and feature a wide common‑mode voltage range of –7 V to +12 V. The devices provide three‑state outputs, fail‑safe high output when inputs are open, and are pin‑compatible with SN75173 and SN75175.

Typical applications include RS485/RS422 level translation and quad line receivers for industrial data networks. The datasheet provides electrical characteristics, typical performance curves, functional tables, test circuit diagrams, and guidelines for cable selection, termination, and AC‑coupled termination to minimize power consumption.
