The MAX3218 is an RS-232 transceiver with low power consumption, supports a wide voltage range from 1.8V to 4.25V, and has Maxim's AutoShutdown™ feature.

The MAX3224–MAX3227/MAX3244/MAX3245 are 3V-powered EIA/TIA-232 and V.28/V.24 communications interfaces with automatic shutdown/wakeup features and high data-rate capabilities. All devices achieve a 1µA supply current using Maxim’s revolutionary AutoShutdown Plus™ feature. These devices automatically enter a low-power shutdown mode when the RS-232 cable is disconnected or the transmitters of the connected peripherals are inactive, and the UART driving the transmitter inputs is inactive for more than 30 seconds. They turn on again when they sense a valid transition at any transmitter or receiver input. AutoShutdown Plus saves power without changes to the existing BIOS or operating system. The MAX3225/MAX3227/MAX3245 also feature MegaBaud™ operation, guaranteeing 1Mbps for high-speed applications such as communicating with ISDN modems. The MAX3238 is a true RS-232 transceiver that achieves a 1µA supply current with Maxim’s revolutionary AutoShutdown Plus™ feature. When the device does not sense a valid signal transition on either the receiver or transmitter inputs within 30sec, the on-board power supply and drivers shut down. This occurs if the RS-232 cable is disconnected or if the transmitters of the connected peripheral are inactive. The system turns on again when a valid transition is applied to any RS-232 receiver or transmitter input, saving power without changes to the existing BIOS or operating system.

MAX1406 is an RS-232 IC designed by MAXIM USA. Its ESD protection level reaches ±15kV and has passed IEC1000-4-2, IEC1000-4-2, IEC1000-4-2 tests.

The MAX1489E is a quad, low-power line receiver designed for EIA/TIA-232, EIA/TIA-562, and CCITT V.28 communications. Each receiver input is protected against ±15kV electrostatic discharge (ESD) shocks. These inputs have a ±25V range and feature hysteresis and time-domain filtering. The outputs are TTL and CMOS compatible. The MAX1489E has a 120kbps guaranteed data rate. Supply current is typically 350µA.

The MAX3185 is a complete DTE RS-232 serial port designed to meet the stringent ESD requirements of the European community. It has enhanced ESD protection, a data rate of up to 230kbps, and is suitable for desktop PC and motherboard applications.

MAX3186 is a RS-232 transceiver chip produced by Maxim. It has ±15kV ESD protection and runs at 230kbps. It is widely used in various communications devices.

The MAX1253/MAX1254 are 10-channel (8 external, 2 internal) 12-bit system monitor ADCs with internal reference. A programmable single-ended/diff- ferential mux accepts voltage and remote-diode tem- perature-sensor inputs. These devices independently monitor the input channels without microprocessor interaction and generate an interrupt when any variable exceeds user-defined limits. The MAX1253/MAX1254 configure both high and low limits, as well as the num- ber of fault cycles allowed, before generating an inter- rupt. These ADCs can also perform recursive data averaging for noise reduction. Programmable wait inter- vals between conversion sequences allow the selection of the sample rate. At the maximum sampling rate of 94ksps (auto mode, single channel enabled), the MAX1253 consumes only 5mW (1.7mA at 3V). AutoShutdownTM reduces supply current to 190µA at 2ksps and to less than 8µA at 50sps. Stand-alone operation, combined with ease of use in a small package (16-pin TSSOP), makes the MAX1253/ MAX1254 ideal for multichannel system-monitoring applications. Low power consumption also makes these devices a good fit for hand-held and battery-pow- ered applications.

MAX3212 is a low-power serial interface chip using Maxim's Auto-Shutdown mode. It has 3 RS-232 drivers and 5 RS-232 receivers, and works with a power supply of 2.7V to 3.6V. It is compatible with EIA/TIA-232E and V.28/V.24 standards and has a data transmission speed of 235kbps.

The MAX212 is a Texas Instruments 3V powered EIA/TIA-232E and V.28/V.24 communication interface transceiver with 3 drivers and 5 receivers with minimum power consumption. The operating voltage range extends from 3.6V to 3.0V while still maintaining true RS-232 and EIA/TIA-562 voltage levels. A typical 1µA shutdown mode reduces power consumption, extending battery life in portable systems. When shut down, all receivers can remain active or can be disabled under logic control. This enables a system incorporating the CMOS MAX212 to be in low-power shutdown mode and monitor incoming RS-232 activity. A guaranteed data rate of 120kbps provides compatibility with popular software for communicating with personal computers. Three-state drivers on all receiver outputs are provided so that multiple receivers, generally of different interface standards, can be wired-ORed at the UART. The MAX212 is available in both small-outline (SO) and shrink-small-outline (SSOP) packages. The SSOP package occupies less than half of the board area required by the equivalent SO package.

The MAX214 +5V RS-232 transceiver provides a complete, 8-line, software-configurable, DTE or DCE port RS-232 interface. Tx, Rx, RTS, CTS, DTR, DSR, DCD, and RI circuits can be configured as either Data Terminal Equipment (DTE) or Data Circuit-Terminating Equipment (DCE) using the DTE/DCE control pin. The MAX214 eliminates the need to swap cables when switching between DTE and DCE configurations.

The MAX218 is a low-power RS-232 transceiver from TI that can be powered directly from two alkaline, nickel-cadmium, or nickel-metal hydride cells, without any form of voltage regulator. It provides a wide +1.8V to +4.25V operating voltage range, while maintaining true RS-232 and EIA/TIA-562 voltage levels.
