This application note introduces ST’s new high-temperature TRIAC family suitable for many high temperature applications, such as vacuum cleaners. These TRIACs can operate in ambient temperatures up to 150 °C. The design of TRIACs operating at high temperature requires special attention to the turn-off capability. In this application note, we first describe the turn-off behavior of TRIACs, then briefly explain how to optimize the turn-off capability. Finally, we present the performance of a new 12 A, 600 V device and compare it with other high-temperature TRIACs available on the market today, under extremely severe temperature conditions as can appear in vacuum cleaners.
