intersil ISL83385E Manual

Update: 30 September, 2023

The ISL83385E is an Intersil-produced 3.0V to 5.5V powered RS-232 transmitter/receiver that meets EIA/TIA-232 and V.28/V.24 specifications, even at VCC = 3.0V. It is mainly used in PDAs, Palmtops and notebook and laptop computers that require low power consumption. The device employs an efficient on-chip charge pump and a manual power-down function to reduce standby supply current to 1µA. The small footprint packaging and the use of small, low-value capacitors also save board space. Under the worst-case load conditions, data rates greater than 250kbps are guaranteed. This device is fully compatible with 3.3V only systems, mixed 3.3V and 5.0V systems, and 5.0V only systems. The single-pin power-down function (SHDN = 0) disables all the transmitters, while shutting down the charge pump to minimize supply current drain. Table 1 summarizes the features of the ISL83385E, while Application Note AN9863 summarizes the features of each device comprising the 3V RS-232 family.
