MAX3209E is a dual DTE RS-232 serial port chip from Texas Instruments that ensures compliance with the stringent ESD requirements of the European Community. The device minimizes board space and power consumption by eliminating the need for a negative power supply; it integrates two serial ports and a charge pump into a single 38-pin TSSOP package. During standby, while the device oper- ates from the single +3V to +5.5V logic supply, one receiver on each port remains active, allowing automatic system wake-up when peripheral communications resume.

The MAX3316E–MAX3319E are 2.5V powered RS-232 compatible transceivers. These devices feature shut- down (MAX3317E), AutoShutdown Plus™ (MAX3318E/ MAX3319E), and enhanced electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection integrated into the chip. All transmitter outputs and receiver inputs are protected to ±15kV using the IEC 1000-4-2 Air-Gap Discharge method, ±8kV using the IEC 1000-4-2 Contact Discharge method, and ±15kV using the Human Body Model. All devices are guaranteed at a data rate of 460kbps. The transceivers have a proprietary low-dropout trans- mitter output stage enabling RS-232 compatible opera- tion from a +2.25V to +3.0V supply with a dual charge pump. The charge pump requires only four 0.1µF capacitors. The MAX3318E/MAX3319E feature a logic- level output (READY) that asserts when the charge pump is regulating and the device is ready to begin transmitting. The MAX3318E/MAX3319E achieve a 1µA supply current using Maxim’s revolutionary AutoShutdown Plus feature. These devices automatically enter a low-power shut- down mode when the RS-232 cable is disconnected or the transmitters of the connected peripherals are inactive for more than 30 seconds. The MAX3311/MAX3313 are low-power, +5V EIA/TIA-232-compatible transceivers. Both devices have one transmitter and one receiver. The transceivers have a proprietary low-dropout transmitter output stage enabling RS-232-compatible operation from a +5V sup- ply with a single inverting charge pump. These devices require only three 0.1µF capacitors and will run at data rates up to 460kbps while maintaining RS-232-compati- ble output levels. The MAX3311 features a 1µA shutdown mode. In shut- down the device turns off the charge pump, pulls V- to ground, and the transmitter output is disabled. The MAX3313 features an INVALID output that asserts high when an active RS-232 cable signal is connected, sig- naling to the host that a peripheral is connected to the communication port.

The MAX114/MAX118 are microprocessor-compatible, 8-bit, 4-channel and 8-channel analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). They operate from a single +5V supply and use a half-flash technique to achieve a 660ns conversion time (1Msps). A power-down (PWRDN) pin reduces current consumption typically to 1µA. The devices return from power-down mode to normal operating mode in less than 200ns, allowing large supply-current reductions in burst-mode applications (in burst mode, the ADC wakes up from a low-power state at specified intervals to sample the analog input signals). Both converters include a track/hold, enabling the ADC to digitize fast analog signals. Microprocessor (µP) interfaces are simplified because the ADC can appear as a memory location or I/O port without external interface logic. The data outputs use latched, three-state buffer circuitry for direct connection to an 8-bit parallel µP data bus or system input port. The MAX114/MAX118 input/reference configuration enables ratiometric operation. The 4-channel MAX114 is available in a 24-pin DIP or SSOP. The 8-channel MAX118 is available in a 28-pin DIP or SSOP. RS-232-compliant data transmission is guaranteed up to 460kbps. The MAX3190/MAX3190E are EIA/TIA-232 transmitters that convert CMOS/TTL logic levels to RS-232-compliant signals. The MAX3190E transmitter output is protected to ±15kV per the Human Body Model, ±8kV per IEC 1000-4-2 Contact Discharge, and ±15kV per IEC 1000-4-2 Air-Gap Discharge, providing protection against harsh environments. The MAX3233E/MAX3235E are EIA/TIA-232 and V.28/V.24 communications interfaces with automatic shutdown/wake-up features, high data-rate capabilities, and enhanced electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection. All transmitter outputs and receiver inputs are protected to ±15kV using IEC 1000-4-2 Air-Gap Discharge, to ±8kV using IEC 1000-4-2 Contact Discharge, and to ±15kV using the Human Body Model. The MAX3233E operates from a +3.3V supply; the MAX3235E operates from +5.0V. All devices achieve a 1µA supply current using Maxim's revolutionary AutoShutdown Plus™ feature. These devices automatically enter a low-power shutdown mode when the following two conditions occur: either the RS-232 cable is disconnected or the transmitters of the connected peripherals are inactive, and the UART driving the transmitter inputs is inactive for more than 30 seconds. They turn on again when they sense a valid transition at any transmitter or receiver input. AutoShutdown Plus saves power without changes to the existing BIOS or operating system. The MAX3233E/MAX3235E have internal dual charge pumps requiring no external capacitors. Both transceivers have a proprietary low-dropout transmitter output stage that enables true RS-232 performance from a +3.0V to +3.6V supply for the MAX3233E or a +4.5V to +5.5V supply for the MAX3235E. These devices are guaranteed to operate up to 250kbps. Both are available in space-saving 20-pin wide SO or plastic DIP packages.

The MAX1488E quad, low-power line driver is designed for EIA/TIA-232, EIA/TIA-562, and CCITT V.28 communications in harsh environments. Each transmitter output is protected against ±15kV electrostatic discharge (ESD) shocks. The inputs are TTL and CMOS compatible with minimal loading. The outputs feature internally controlled slew-rate limiting and current limiting. This device has a guaranteed 120kbps data rate. Power-supply current is less than 180µA over a ±4.5V to ±13.2V supply voltage range. The MAX1488E is pin compatible with the MC1488, MC14C88, SN75188, SN75C188, DS1488, and DS14C88. It is available in 14-pin plastic DIP and SO packages.

The MAX3320 is a combination of a microprocessor (µP) supervisory circuit and an RS-232 transceiver. It can precisely monitor 5V and 3.3V power supply voltages, and has a 100ms (minimum) power-on reset pulse width, power-supply transient immunity, and guaranteed RESET valid voltage down to VCC = 1V. The device also features 4µA supply current, always-active receivers, always-active power-on reset, and 4µA low-power shutdown, and can run at a guaranteed data rate of 250kbps.

The MAX220–MAX249 family of line drivers/receivers is intended for all EIA/TIA-232E and V.28/V.24 communica- tions interfaces, particularly applications where ±12V is not available. These parts are especially useful in battery-powered sys- tems, since their low-power shutdown mode reduces power dissipation to less than 5µW. The MAX225, MAX233, MAX235, and MAX245/MAX246/MAX247 use no external components and are recommended for appli- cations where printed circuit board space is critical.
