This paper presents a method for using distributed computing technology in scientific workflows, which can achieve parallel execution of parameter sweep workflows on ad-hoc network computing resources, thereby significantly improving workflow execution performance. The method implements a Master-Slave distributed execution framework in the Kepler scientific workflow environment, which can realize parallel and independent execution of sub-workflows, and verifies the usability and time efficiency of the method through a use case in the theoretical ecology domain.

This paper studies the parameter sensitivity of term frequency normalization in the probabilistic model for information retrieval. High parameter sensitivity indicates that a slight change of the parameter value may considerably affect the retrieval performance. Therefore, a weighting model with a high parameter sensitivity is not robust enough to provide a consistent retrieval performance across different collections and queries. We suggest that the parameter sensitivity is due to the fact that the query term weights are not adequate enough to allow informative query terms to differ from non-informative ones. We show that query term reweighing, which is part of the relevance feedback process, can be successfully used to reduce the parameter sensitivity. Experiments on five Text REtrieval Conference (TREC) collections show that the parameter sensitivity does remarkably decrease when query terms are reweighed.

In this paper we characterize the channel access delay and the end-to-end delay experienced by a message in a wireless ad-hoc network. We show that the delay ex- perienced is a function of four network parameters: 1) channel access probability, 2) transmission power or radius, 3) network load and 4) density of nodes. We character- ize the effect of each of these parameters on the delay and show that there exists an optimal transmission radius and channel access probability for given load and node density that delivers the best delay performance for the network.

This paper investigates the use of genetic algorithms for automated selection of parameters in a wireless ad hoc networking system. Experimental results demonstrate that the genetic algorithm can optimize for different classes of operating conditions. We also compare our genetic algorithm optimization against hand-tuning in a complex, realistic scenario and show how the genetic algorithm provides better performance.
