This application note describes the performance of a 200 W reference board with wide-range mains operation and power-factor-correction (PFC). Its electrical specification is tailored to a typical high-end application for LCD TV or monitor applications. The main features of this design are the very low no-load input consumption (<0.5 W) and the very high global efficiency, better than 87% at full load and nominal mains voltage (115-230 Vac). The circuit consists of three main blocks; the first is a front-end PFC pre-regulator based on the L6563 PFC controller. The second stage is a multi-resonant half-bridge converter whose control is implemented through the STMicroelectronics L6599 resonant controller. A further auxiliary flyback converter based on the VIPer12A-E off-line primary switcher completes the architecture. This third block is mainly intended for microprocessor supply and display power management operations.

The STM1403/1404 is a family of low power intrusion (tamper) detection security supervisors for the Point of Sale (POS) terminal market. They enable manufacturers to meet security standards such as FIPS-140 (NIST, US Dept. of Commerce), EMV Co, ISO, ZKA (Germany) and Visa PED. Until recently, many of these intrusion detection functions were implemented by using several discrete devices. The STM1403/1404 integrates all these functions into a small profile security-friendly QFN package. The STM1403/1404 meets most price, performance and board space objectives while ensuring customers are able to meet current and future security certification requirements for physical and environmental tamper detection.

One way to minimize the size and complexity of a battery charger is to use a linear-type charger. The linear charger drops the AC adapter voltage down to the battery voltage. The number of external components is low: linear chargers require input and output bypass capacitors, and sometimes need an external pass transistor, and resistors for setting voltage and current limits. The main pitfall of a linear charger is power dissipation. The charger simply drops the AC adapter voltage down to the battery voltage. In the case of a 0.8 A charger, a 5 V±10% regulated AC adapter voltage, and battery voltage that varies between 4.2 V and 2.5 V, the power dissipation can range from 0.64 W to 2.0 W. This type of charger is simpler than the switch-mode type, mainly because the passive LC filter is not required. It dissipates the most power when the battery voltage is at its minimum, since the difference between the fixed input voltage and the battery voltage is greatest during this condition.

This paper introduces a non-isolated double output dual-buck/boost DC/DC converter topology based on the VIPerX2A family. The proposed topology is a non-isolated transformerless topology using an intermediate tap inductor and transformer. This topology operates in the 88 ~ 265 VAC wide input voltage range and can be used in low power and low cost applications.
